From The Unemployment Line To The Cruise Line

Having to look for another cruise job is no easy task, now or ever. It became my job to look for a job. I did it for 8 hours a day every day. Filling out applications and going to job fairs.

Problem was, I had skills that were unique to just one area. Everything else I knew about was just hobby info. But I needed to do something. I started looking into getting an associates degree in something, anything. I had some previous college credit and I was in the Military. Maybe I could get something quickly to pad my resume? But, no one accepted all of my credits or they wouldn't give me enough to get an associate without $20,000 and some class time. So, that was out of the question.

As I continued to review all the job sites on my daily quest for work, I happened upon a request for a Junior Assistant Purser for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines. Wait! Stop the presses! What?! A job on a cruise ship! Awesome! I love cruise ships and I love cruises. That would be perfect. So, the search started. What skills do I have that transfer to the Cruise Industry?

There's a lot more cruise lines out there than you realize. I went to all the major cruise lines websites first to see what jobs or positions they had posted. Sometimes the links were right there in front of you and sometimes you had to fish around for them. They weren't quite so obvious.

And as I'm sure that most of us have come across as I did, that most of the positions required qualifications that weren't even close to what I could do.
